Fraud Alert: Fake Invoices Targeting Planning & Zoning Applicants

BE AWARE OF FRAUDULENT INVOICES BEING SENT TO APPLICANTS BEFORE PLANNING AND ZONING BOARDS THROUGHOUT NYS

Municipalities in New York are required by the NY Open Meetings Lawto upload applications and project files before planning and zoning boards to their municipal websites. These applications usually include information about applicants including names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, etc. Scammers have been utilizing this online information to pull personal information from applications and project files to send fake invoices that appear to be from municipalities to persons with applications before zoning or planning boards for project review costs or other fees or charges.

Such demands for payment are fraudulent, and residents should NOT respond to any email seeking payment in relation to a Village permit.  If you have any questions, please contact Erin Reis, Code Enforcement Officer at (518) 392-5821 ext. 5924 ereis@villageofchathamny.gov or Desiree Kelleher, Village Clerk at (515) 392-5821 ext. 5921 dkelleher@villageofchathamny.gov.
