Village of Chatham, NY

FALL NEWSLETTER 2025

BACK TO SCHOOL – PEDESTRIANS & BICYCLISTS

As school resumes, please remember that children and bicyclists will be more active throughout the Village. Be alert when driving and remember: bicyclists have the same rights to the road as motorists, and pedestrians always have the right-of-way in crosswalks.

LEAF PICKUP & YARD DEBRIS

Leaf pickup will run from October through December (weather permitting). Please note:

• Curbside collection is for leaves only. Brush, stones, and other yard waste damage equipment and cannot be accepted.

• Leaves, brush, clippings, and small limbs may be dropped off at the DPW Garage (Brookside Avenue) Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.

• Brush from land clearing or tree removal should be taken to the Greenport Transfer Station and not to the DPW Garage.

Questions? Email pgenovese@villageofchathamny.gov or call (518) 392-5877.

COLUMBIA COUNTY K.I.S.S. PROGRAM – DOCUMENT SHREDDING

Seniors age 60+ may bring sensitive documents to Village Hall from September 8–19 for free secure destruction. Documents are signed over to the Village Clerk and placed in a locked container accessible only to the shredding vendor.

CODE ENFORCEMENT REMINDER

Per the 2020 Building Code of New York State, temporary encroachments (awnings, tables, chairs, sandwich board signs, umbrellas, etc.) must maintain:

• At least 3 feet of clear width

• At least 7 feet of clear height

This ensures safe and accessible pedestrian walkways.

PUBLIC WORKS – WHAT NOT TO FLUSH

Help protect our sewer system! Grease, oil, and fats should cool before being placed in the garbage—never in drains or toilets. The following items also should never be flushed:

Feminine products • “Flushable” wipes • Condoms • Facial tissues • Dental floss • Paper towels • Cigarette butts • Medication • Cotton balls • Band-Aids • Diapers • Q-tips • Kitty litter • Gasoline • Paint thinner

SNOW & ICE REMOVAL

As winter approaches, please keep sidewalks clear of snow and ice. The updated Local Law on snow and ice removal (Local Law 5 of 2022) can be read in full at www.villageofchathamny.gov/ordinances.

FEEDING WILDLIFE

A reminder: It is illegal to intentionally feed white-tailed deer in New York State. Feeding deer can lead to property damage, ecological harm, and increased risk of disease transmission among deer populations.

Back by even more popular demand (more than one person this time), here’s that same picture of a spooky ghost that I drew. But now… it’s slightly bigger!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
