The Village of Chatham Police Department is located in Columbia County, New York, and encompasses approximately 1.24 square miles with a population of about 1,500 residents. Despite its size, the village is a vibrant and diverse community, featuring manufacturing facilities, public schools, retail businesses, restaurants, and tourism attractions. One of the most significant events in the village is the Columbia County Fair—a six-day annual celebration that drew over 20,000 visitors in 2024.
Chatham also hosts more than 20 local events each year, including street fairs, festivals, community walks, 5K road races, bicycle races, and parades. These events attract large crowds and require coordinated public safety efforts to ensure a secure and welcoming environment for participants and visitors.
The Chatham Police Department is committed to providing a wide range of emergency and non-emergency services to the community. These include law enforcement operations, crime scene investigations, and court security for the Town of Chatham. The department also plays a critical role in providing safety and traffic control during community events throughout the year.
The department is comprised of 17 part-time sworn police officers. It is led by the Chief of Police and supported by three Sergeants.

Sex Offenders
The Chatham Police Department is partnering with the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, Columbia County District Attorney’s Office, Columbia County Probation Department, Hudson Police Department, Greenport Police Department, Stockport Police Department, and Philmont Police Department to implement the OffenderWatch program throughout Columbia County.
This initiative is designed to enhance public safety by improving communication, information sharing, and coordination among participating law enforcement agencies regarding registered sex offenders.
OffenderWatch provides law enforcement with advanced tools to monitor offenders, coordinate investigations, and share critical information more effectively across jurisdictions.
The program also gives residents greater access to important safety information. Community members can:
Search for registered sex offenders in their area
Receive real-time email notifications and alerts
Use the free family safety app
Identify offenders living near important locations
Submit anonymous tips directly to law enforcement
The Chatham Police Department remains committed to using technology and regional partnerships to improve public safety and keep residents informed.
