Shaker Museum Groundbreaking Ceremony
On Saturday, April 5, 2025, Mayor John Howe of the Village of Chatham, NY participated in the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Shaker Museum at 5 Austerlitz Street. This event marked the long-awaited commencement of construction for a 21st-century facility designed to showcase the world's most comprehensive collection of Shaker material culture and archives.
The museum's design, crafted by the renowned Selldorf Architects, involves the transformation of an existing historic building and construction of a modern addition surrounded by public gardens. The four-floor facility will feature over 7,500 square feet of space dedicated to permanent and rotating exhibitions, as well as areas for events, workshops, and community gatherings.
In his opening statement, Mayor Howe expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its potential to serve as a cultural and economic anchor for Chatham and the surrounding region. The museum is anticipated to attract more than 30,000 visitors annually, bringing economic opportunities to Columbia County and the region.
The Shaker Museum's collection, currently housed in Old Chatham, includes an extensive array of Shaker artifacts such as furniture, tools, textiles, photographs, and archival records. The new facility will provide a permanent home for these items, allowing for greater public access and educational opportunities.
The groundbreaking ceremony represents a significant milestone in preserving and sharing the rich history of the Shaker community with future generations.
